Whether it’s the metal door on your backyard shed or the steel beams on a bridge, rust can cause a lot of damage over time and that’s why you have to stop it in its tracks. Let’s get into what Rust Destroyer is and how this solvent-based, non-toxic, rust-converting paint primer can help you get the job done without relying on multiple products.

What is Rust Destroyer?

Rust Destroyer

Rust Destroyer is a rust converting primer that is solvent-based and has two active ingredients: tannic acid and an organic polymer. The first ingredient, tannic acid, reacts with iron oxide (or rust) and chemically converts it to iron tannate, a dark-coloured stable material. The second active ingredient, the organic polymer, provides a protective primer layer. The overall chemical reaction converts rust into a stable, protective coating that serves as an excellent primer for both oil and epoxy-based paints.

How Rust Destroyer Works?

Rather than removing rust, a rust converter mixes chemically with iron oxide to create a neutral substance. That neutral substance can be painted over in order to conceal the existence of any rust and to prevent further corrosion. Rust Destroyer can be used on almost anything metal and rusty that you would find in your backyard! However, a rust converter doesn’t work on aluminum, copper, stainless steel, or galvanized metal.

How to Apply Rust Destroyer?

Rust Destroyer

Start by cleaning up any loose particles, grease, or dirt from the rusted surface. Then using a wire brush, remove any loose flakes or bubbles. Next, shake the Rust Destroyer can for about a minute and then spray. If you want to make this part even easier, consider using an attachable sprayer! Make sure to hold the can in an upright position approximately 12 to 16 inches away from the surface. Spray in a back-and-forth motion, and then wait ten minutes before applying a second coat. Finally, wait at least 24 to 72 hours before painting, or once the primer is dry to touch to ensure that the Rust Destroyer is fully cured.

As a general rule, Rust Destroyer is perfect when applied over rusted metal, new bare metal, or painted metal that is now rusted and is going to be painted again. When applied correctly, it is guaranteed to stop rust for up to 5 years! Unlike other rust converters, Rust Destroyer is heat resistant, up to 427°C and just one can cover approximately 15 square feet.

Rust Destroyer is a major breakthrough in paint chemistry as it reacts with existing rust and converts it into an inert compound. It’s safe, easy to use, and handy to have around any home or shop.
