Windy, dry conditions fuel grass fires that can burn hundreds of acres. The flames are a stark reminder of the potentially catastrophic danger that grass fires pose to farmland, machinery, buildings, and other high-value assets.
Plan ahead to prepare for a grass fire and know what to do when one threatens your area. Some tips for protecting your space.
- Remove all dead vegetation including plants, leaves, grass, and weeds from your yard, roof, rain gutters, windows, and under your decks
- Remove branches that hang over your roof and keep dead branches away from your chimney
- Trim trees regularly
- Relocate wood piles further away from your house
- Create a separation between trees, shrubs, and items that could catch fire such as patio furniture, wood piles, swing sets, etc.
